Announcing V2X Americas: A Catalyst for a New Industry

The two worlds of automotive and communications are converging. Manufacturers like GM and Ford, and computing companies like Google and Uber, are transforming the plain old automobile into a driverless on-demand transportation-as-a-service device.

At the same time, the networking and communications ecosystem is positioning to transform the networks that will ultimately connect, manage and deliver services to new types of vehicles – on the ground and in the air. Communication for next generation transportation infrastructure – people, things, streets, other road users – is the next target for innovation by the LTE and mobile networking community.

The opportunity is so broad, and the solutions required so deep, that a new industry category is required: V2X – Vehicle-to-Everything. Intelligent Transportation Systers (ITS) doesn’t accurately reflect the innovation in the network and in direct communication to other vehicles. Connected Vehicle doesn’t adequately capture the infrastructure requirements and real-time awareness to surrounding infrastructure that will fulfill on the promise of the next generation driverless vehicles.

V2X technology allows vehicles to communicate with each other, the infrastructure, and vulnerable road users, making driving safer and more efficient for everyone. By turning the invisible visible, V2X warns the driver of road hazards, helping reduce traffic injuries and fatalities. In addition to improving safety, V2X helps to optimize traffic flow, reduce traffic congestion, and lessen the environmental impact of transportation.

V2X requires cloud computing, antennas capable of sharing data with many nodes both inside and outside the vehicle, sensors that create a safer and more informed driving experience and rugged, high-speed, in-vehicle data networks that are vital to achieving the seamless, connected, feature-rich automotive future consumers are demanding.

V2X requires an entirely new ecosystem to spur commercialization of this critical technology. That’s why we are launching V2X Americas 2019 a fresh, new, infrastructure-first technology mash-up. V2X Americas is focused on the needs and opportunities in the underlying digital infrastructure – where sensors communicate with vehicles; vehicles communicate with the surrounding environment and each other; where the devices connect directly and also through a network.

We look beyond connected cars and self-driving vehicles to world in which vehicles are rolling data centers, gathering vast amounts of data in real-time, analyzing, integrating and sharing with an array of third-party applications and cloud service providers. As Panasonic’s Chris Armstrong says, “The potential to turn every vehicle into a sensor is a massive data opportunity.”

Here’s what we hope to accomplish with the V2X Global events series:

  • Enabling technology evolution through information-exchange, learning, demonstrations, partnerships and alliances through relationship building
  • Build and develop the Ecosystem that fulfills on the promise of personal mobility, autonomous and next generation transportation enabled by next generation network connectivity
  • Contribute to urban planning departments who require safer and more efficient transportation systems – utilizing V2X communications to unlock new methods of revenue generation for transport departments and provide valuable inputs to a municipality’s environmental and sustainability initiatives

Executives from automotive, transportation, wireless, mobility, networking, cloud computing and government know that disruption is coming. We hope you’ll join us in Santa Clara in September 2019 to get ready for it.
